About Us

Mission Statement

NY Icecats is an New York City based youth ice hockey organization committed to offering children competitive recreational and lite-travel hockey programs, with coaching from top professional instructors. Our schedule is arranged to accommodate Sabbath observant families, with no games or practices on Friday evenings or Saturdays.

History

The NY Icecats program was founded in 1999 by parent coaches, the enthusiastic David Stern, Jamie Lassner, and Steven Gurewitsch, as a not-for-profit youth hockey organization. The goal was to provide a meaningful hockey experience to children from Sabbath observant families that cannot play or practice hockey on Saturdays. The program started as a pure learn-to-skate Sunday session and over time developed into an organization that accommodates children of every age, skill level and religious background. Our teams have competed successfully at the Lasker Rink, Riverbank, Chelsea Piers and Icehouse leagues and tournaments, as well as travel tournaments including the Liberty Cup in Philadelphia and the Congressional Cup in Washington D.C.

Today, our travel teams compete in the Hudson Valley Hockey League against other NY/NJ based travel teams, while our recreational teams play in Central Park's Lasker Cup League.
